A sudden approval for construction work in October adjacent to the Citigate Central Hotel has resulted in a change of venue. The Conference will now be held at the Sydney Marriott Hotel, 36 College Street, Sydney, NSW 2010, Australia. This venue is just as convenient to the Sydney CBD (and we’ve been bumped up a star).
Room rates and bookings will be honoured and moved to the new venue. The Conference Committee will be contacting delegates in the near future.

Thanks go to the event co-ordinators and staff at both Mirvac hotels for their assistance in making the arrangements and transferring our bookings.

  • Cookbook indexing
Changes to Workshops program Thursday 15 October. Unfortunately Workshop 2 on Cookbook Indexing to be presented by Lynn Farkas and Sherrey Quinn on Thursday 15 October has been cancelled. The good news is that Sherrey Quinn will host a Roundtable discussion on cookbook indexing on Satrurday 17 October from 2.00-3.00pm.
  • Changes to Conference program
In view of the additional Roundtable on Cookbook Indexing to the program, the proposed Roundtable for delegates new to indexing has been rearranged; this will decrease the competition for choice among the Roundtables. Those new to indexing can meet at  lunchtimes at designated tables on both Friday 16 October and again on Saturday 17 October. This will provide the opportuity for people new to indexing or new delegates to the conference to sit down with both new and experienced indexers over lunch to chat informally about the industry generally or on specfic topics. Those interested will also have the opportunity to attend one of the indexing clinics, to be held at the end of both lunchtimes.
  • Cookbook indexing Roundtable
  • Roundtable Discussions
This year, five Roundtables are planned – medical and scientific indexing, legal indexing,  history and biography, genealogy and cookbook indexing.

      Updated program

Keynote speaker Jan C. WRIGHT External link (USA): Future practicalities

  • Two major trends are emerging that can affect the indexing business and offer new opportunities. eBook publishing is changing the reading populace's habits, likes and dislikes, and we should be ready to discuss keeping indexes in eBooks with publishers. At the same time, user-generated indexing and tagging is changing how the public finds and marks information they need. We have a battle on one side, and an opportunity to expand our market on the other.
  • Jan C. Wright is an indexer, taxonomist, and controller of wild vocabularies who has operated her own business, Wright Information Indexing Services, since 1991. She is a member of the American Society for Indexing (ASI), teaches for University of California Berkeley’s Indexing Course, and is the developer of Indexer’s Network, an online social site for indexers. She has extensive experience in software documentation, embedded indexing, and online system indexing, and is intrigued with the interfaces for finding information. In 2009, her index for Real World Adobe CS3 won the ASI/H.W. Wilson Award for Excellence in Indexing, the first technical index to ever win the award. She has abandoned big city life to live in the mountains of New Mexico with her husband Chris and three silly cats, and loves to watch the ravens gather at sunset. Her Web site is at www.wrightinformation.com.

Embedded indexing workshop: Jan C Wright (USA)

  • This three-hour workshop will cover the basic techniques of indexing within Word, Framemaker and InDesign files. Best practices, the advantages and disadvantages of embedding, and developing a list of issues that publishers must agree upon will be covered. If you have a laptop with Microsoft Word, any version, please bring it for a practice session. We will be indexing three small files to get a feel for working with embedded entries and finding and editing entries.

      Accommodation

  • The World Masters Games are being held in Sydney from 9-18 October and most hotels are booking out rapidly and charging a premium for rooms!
  • Please note: Delegates will need to book quickly if they want to secure a room at the hotel. Please contact the hotel quoting ANZSI NSW conference 15-16 October. Delegates do not need to pay immediately but the hotel will request details of your credit card as a guarantee.

April 2009

Glenda Browne's new book The Indexing Companion Workbook: Book Indexing, will be launched at the conference on Friday.
