The Practice of Indexing
Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers Conference, Sydney, 15–17 October, 2009
This conference of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers will be held at the Citigate Central Hotel, 169–179 Thomas St, Sydney 2000, NSW Australia.
CALL FOR PAPERS (PDF version)
The theme of the conference is the practice of indexing. The Conference Committee will particularly welcome practical, “how to” presentations on any indexing topic, both familiar and innovative, such as basic indexing skills, methods and techniques for beginners, and technological developments and specialised types of indexing, to assist experienced practising indexers.
Sessions on other topics of interest to indexers may also be scheduled (see below: Broader topical areas).
Some possible topical areas:
Practical theme
* How to make a start as an indexer (e.g. training, mentoring, registration)
* How to compile indexes (e.g. analysis, types of indexes, specialist subjects)
* How to deal with difficult and controversial areas (e.g. style, marking text, proper names)
* How to set up indexing projects (e.g. case studies, environmental data)
* How to keep up with developments
* How to run an indexing business (e.g. quoting, organising & keeping records, green office)
Broader topical areas
* Theory of indexing
* History of indexing
* Publishing innovations
* Information industry trends
* Professional issues
* Economics of indexing
* Future of indexing
Papers, panels and workshops
Papers may be presented as full conference papers, or in forum (panel) sessions.
Thursday 15 October will be devoted solely to professional development workshops.
If you are interested in presenting a paper, contributing to a panel, or running a workshop, please complete the form in the attached email.
Abstracts (maximum 200 words) ideally should be submitted at the same time as your application, but no later than 28 February 2009.
Round table sessions
Round table sessions will be scheduled if delegates indicate that there is a demand for them. These will be informal discussions between about ten people on subjects of interest. If you would be prepared to lead a round table discussion, and perhaps provide some notes or a set of problems associated with a particular area of interest, please indicate the topic on the form in the attached email.
