SUMMARY:ANZSI National Indexing Day 2019: Melbourne Indexers
DESCRIPTION:National Indexing Day is on Thursday 28 March. Celebrate the day by meeting with your fellow indexers at ACMI Café\, Federation Square (http://fedsquare.com/eatdrink/acmi-cafe-bar) from 10.30 am to 12.00 pm. \nNational Indexing Day is not just about keeping the fun to ourselves\, so we’ll be promoting indexing by releasing a terrific book (with an equally terrific index of course!) through the World’s Library – BookCrossing (https://www.bookcrossing.com/).  Our book will carry a unique BCID\, along with indexing-related information\, and its release at The Nook (http://fedsquare.com/news/the-nook-fed-squares-newest-pop-up-venue) will be visible to the whole world. Its serendipitous discovery is sure to make some lucky stranger’s day\, and if they hop onto the site to log their catch\, they’ll make our day too! \nIt would be good to have some idea of the number attending\, so please drop us a line at melbourneindexers@gmail.com if you are going to join us.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Indexers: Indexing music biographies
DESCRIPTION:Indexing biographies can be tricky – indexing biographies connected with Classical music can be trickier! If the readers are musicians\, they will be looking for information on symphonies\, piano trios\, Middle Period style and so on. This doesn’t fit conveniently under a chronological arrangement nor a name/event one. Susan Pierotti will bring some Classical music books with a variety of indexing styles for us to discuss. Feel free to bring along any books on music and composers that you may have. \n\nParking is available down the side of the building. If you are travelling by public transport there is a tram stop nearby\, and Glenferrie Station is just a couple of tram stops away. \nAfter the meeting\, we will go to a local restaurant for a meal (at own expense).

SUMMARY:Melbourne Indexers: Military and Wartime History
DESCRIPTION:In recent times there has been a resurgence of interest in the history and commemoration of twentieth-century wars and those who served in them\, especially in the lead-up to the 100th anniversaries of the Gallipoli campaign and the ending of World War I. This interest has been was accompanied by the publication of numerous books on wartime and military history ranging from biographies of major military figures\, detailed analyses of military strategy\, reports of archaeological digs on battlefields\, to battlefield tourism guidebooks. There have also been many publications on the actions of the military in more contemporary conflicts and peacekeeping missions. \nIn this session we will explore\, as a group\, how military history is indexed in such works. In particular\, we’ll be considering such questions as How are defence forces and military units arranged in the index? Are ranks added to the names of people? How do you index battles\, campaigns\, and locations? How do you index ordnance (i.e. military materiel)? \nSpend some time browsing indexes to wartime and military histories and bring something to share to the session. \n\nParking is available down the side of the building. If you are travelling by public transport there is a tram stop nearby\, and Glenferrie Station is just a couple of tram stops away. \nAfter the meeting\, we will go to a local restaurant for a meal (at own expense).

SUMMARY:Melbourne Indexers: Comparing indexes to biographies
DESCRIPTION:Comparing indexes to biographies \nThe way indexers index the main character of the biography can vary from not having an entry under their name to placing everything under their name to something in between. Then the way the indexes are set out can vary. Suddenly subheadings are not filed alphabetically but in page number order or a forced chronological order. Is this used for all subheadings or only for the main character? How do you use your indexing software to file subheadings like this? Run-on style can be used for subheadings or even sub-sub-subheadings. With all these variations what features would be most useful to the biography readers? What indexing tips can we learn by examining various biography indexes? There will be examples to compare\, however why not explore your bookshelves and bring along an example to share? \n\nCarparking is available down the side of the building. If you are travelling by public transport there is a tram stop nearby\, and Glenferrie Station is just a couple of tram stops away. \nAfter the meeting we will go to a local restaurant for a meal (at own expense).

Artwork for the ANZSI website\, social media – Facebook (@ANZSocietyIndexers) and Twitter (@ANZSI_indexers) – and print advertising has been finalised. So far\, approximately 28 block advertisements have been placed in various newsletters and journals. \nActivities planned for 29 March\, or weeks preceding the date\, include: \nCanberra Region Indexers are having a photo taken in front of the public artwork by Keld Moseholm ‘On the staircase’\, at the Gorman House arts precinct. The sculpture depicts four small men climbing a staircase\, reading books. The sculpture has a philosophical aspect by reflecting on the effect of reading on the spirit. \nIndexers SA are planning a photo shoot in front of the Old Colonials\, a mosaic of early SA settlers\, at the State Library of South Australia. Janet Wilkinson\, who works at the Library\, has prepared an index to the colonials featured in the mosaic and will also feature in the photo. \nMelbourne Indexers are finalising a photo shoot in front of a giant index on the wall of the National Gallery of Victoria. Yes\, the NGV has installed a giant version of the index to their Triennial Exhibition publication! The photo opportunity is being timed to coincide with the weekend of the Melbourne Art Book Fair\, also at the NGV. \nNSW Indexers are progressing with an ANZSI National Indexing Day wine labelling effort and are liaising re a group photo shoot at the City of Sydney Library – Customs House\, Circular Quay location. \nIn addition\, Mary Coe and Madeleine Davis have been invited by the School of Information Studies\, Charles Sturt University\, to give a joint presentation to an online session for students undertaking the Metadata for Resource Discovery course \, on or around 29 March. They have about 100 students and the session is recorded for those who cannot attend. \nSimilarly \, Mary and Madeleine are hoping to give a face-to-face presentation to Sydney University of Technology\, Information Technology students. \nGleebooks\, in Blackheath\, Blue Mountains\, has agreed to a photo in front of their window displaying the ANZSI NID media release when it is available. \nFinally\, ANZSI has been invited to participate in a podcast about writer/indexers at the end of February\, run by the Australian Writers Centre\, The AWC has also welcomed the suggestion of a Q&A on indexing for their blog\, at a later date.
